Namkaran Ritual/Puja, naming ceremony of newborn baby. It is performed to formally keep the child’s name based on Janma Nakshatra (Birth star) or name suggested by panditji. Namkaran Puja is a ritual of providing Samskaras to the child, which is considered to be of utmost importance in shaping the character and up-bringing of a child.
The Rig Veda prescribes the formula of giving a name with four components: the nakshatra name, the name of the deity of the month, the family deity’s name, and the popular name by which the child will generally be addressed.
The ceremony is performed by pandit ji starting with Ganesh Puja, Kalash puja, Punyaha vachana, Namakaran is done by whispering the child’s name in the right ear and chanting of vedic mantras and a hawan is performed for the graha shanti of the baby,
When to Perform Namkaran Puja?
Usually performed on the 11th/12th day, In case the ceremony could not be performed on that day then it must be done after three months or on the baby’s first birthday. In certain parts of India, it is done in 3rd, 5th, 7th or 9th month for girls and in 6th, 8th month for boys.

The Namakaran Puja is the first ceremony of a child’s life, it gives him/her a name, a unique identity.
This marks the beginning of his life as a human being and is acknowledged by everyone in the family and circles.
